Summer School

 

The Master’s Degree Course in African and Asian Studies (SAA) organizes in September 2024 the Summer School of the Double Degree Pavia-Fez.

The Summer School of the DD Pavia-Fez intends to provide an integrated learning in the field of Mediterranean Studies, with particular reference to Arab culture and language. The Summer School is conceived, in particular, as a supplementary activity in support of the Double Degree in African and Asian Studies (University of Pavia) and Cultural Studies: Cultures, Identities and Nationhood (Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Fez, Morocco), but open to all students who wish to approach Arabic language and culture. The activities are carried out in partnership with the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah University of Fez in Morocco, the A’Sharqiyah University of Ibra in Oman, La Manouba University in Tunis, the University of Damascus in Syria, the University of Helwan in Cairo in Egypt and the University of Lagos in Nigeria. With these institutions UNIPV has framework agreements and well-established ties of academic and scientific cooperation, faculty and student / staff exchange, as well as the Double Degree between Pavia and Fez.

 

The Summer School of the Double Degree Pavia-Fez is divided into TWO moments:

 

  1. Intensive Arabic language course in English / Arabic for non-Arabic speakers (level A0-A1)

16-27 September 2024

40 hours of Standard Arabic (6 CFU/ECTS) (Mon-Fri 9am-1pm, Classroom 5) (Tuesday 24 September, Classroom Giuridico)

Maximum number of participants: 25

Lecturer: Prof. Ali Hamed Al Farsi, A’Sharqiyah University (Ibra, Oman), native speaker specifically trained in teaching Arabic as a foreign language.

Guest Lecturer: Dr. Abdelhaleem Solaiman, Università degli Studi di Pavia.The lecturer will hold a 4-hour teaching seminar on 26 September 2024.

The course, in collaboration with A’Sharqiyah University (Ibra, Oman), aims to provide basic knowledge of Standard Arabic (Modern Standard Arabic) in its oral and written expression. The teaching will follow a communicative approach, in which, at the same time as learning the alphabet and sounds of the language, short readings and conversation cues will be aimed at the acquisition of basic lexical skills and cultural elements. The course will host a thematic seminar to be held by Dr. Abdelhaleem Solaiman, lecturer in Arabic at the University of Pavia.

The course is free of charge for SAA enrollees and UNIPV students. Outsiders have to pay an enrolment fee of €300.

Subject to a minimum attendance of 80% and passing the final exam, the activity may be credited for 6 CFU/ECTS.

 

 2. Seminar Series Perspectives in Historical Research in North Africa and the Middle  East / Perspectives de la recherche historique en Afrique du Nord et au Moyen- Orient 

16-27 September 2024

20 hours of seminars (3 CFU/ECTS) (Mon-Fri 2-4 pm, Room 5) (Tuesday 24 September, Classroom Giuridico)

The seminar series, in collaboration with Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University (Fez, Morocco), Manouba University (Tunis, Tunisia), Helwan University (Cairo, Egypt), Damascus University (Syria) and the University of Lagos (Nigeria), aims to provide an insight into the perspectives of historical research in North African and Middle Eastern universities, through the studies of renowned lecturers from universities in the Mediterranean region. In dialogue with the lecturers of the Master’s Degree Course in African and Asian Studies, the guest lecturers will offer students the opportunity to approach different perspectives and research topics in the more general field of Mediterranean Studies.

The Degree Course in African and Asian Studies (SAA) organizes in September 2023 the SAA Summer School for learning the Arabic language and further exploring topics of history, culture, and politics of African and Asian societies.

Activities are carried out in partnership with the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah University of Fez in Morocco and the University of La Manouba in Tunis, within the framework of non-residential Collegiate Teaching, particularly with the Collegio Castiglioni. With these institutions, UNIPV has framework agreements and consolidated cooperation ties, faculty and student exchange, as well as the Double Degree between Pavia and Fez.

The Summer School is structured in TWO formative moments:

 

            1.         Intensive Arabic language course for BEGINNERS (level A0-A1)

September 18-29, 2023

The course, taught by Prof. Bassem Bargaoui (University of La Manouba, Tunisia), a native speaker with decades of teaching experience, aims to provide basic knowledge of standard Arabic language (Modern Standard Arabic) in its oral and written expression. The teaching will follow a communicative approach, where, alongside learning the alphabet and sounds of the language, short readings and conversation topics will aim at acquiring basic lexical skills and cultural elements.

Upon achieving a minimum attendance of 80% and passing the final exam, the activity can be credited with 6 ECTS.

           2. Two thematic courses Islam in Morocco (Prof. Sadik Rddad, USMBA) and Cultural Encounters: European Travellers in Morocco and Moroccan Travellers in Europe (Prof. Khalid Bekkaoui, USMBA)

Seminar Program Gender and Diversity Studies in Africa and Asia

Upon achieving a minimum attendance of 80% and passing the final exam, the activity can be credited with 3 ECTS.

            3.         Training workshop on the Arabic language: course on Arabic calligraphy and presentation of the Arabic cultural scene (protagonists, genres, and themes)

 

September 23-24, 2022

14 hours of training (Fri.-Sat. 10-18, Aula B)

Maximum number of participants: 20

The course fee is 170 euros per participant. Working languages are Arabic and English.

The course will be taught by Dr. Omar Ibrahim, figurative artist and calligrapher, who graduated in Fine Arts from the Sculpture Department of the University of Damascus and is currently a lecturer at the École supérieure d’art Pays Basque-ESAPB and SciencePo Paris (Paris and Reims campuses).

Upon achieving a minimum attendance of 80%, participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

Participation requirements

To participate in the course, it is necessary to have a knowledge of Arabic language at A2/B1 level (120 hours of attendance or 18 ECTS).

It is possible to register for both the Arabic course and the seminars, or only for one of the two activities. The issuance of credits is subject to passing a final exam. Registration is free for UniPv students and for those who have applied for enrollment in SAA for the academic year 2021-22. For all others, the registration fee is 230 euros for 6 ECTS and 120 euros for 3 ECTS.

 

All activities of the Summer School will take place in mixed mode (presence/online) according to the various availabilities and needs of students and teachers. Classroom A will be the reference classroom for the activities.

Covid Info. The teaching delivery method will depend on the course of the epidemic curve. In case of zero infections, the Summer School’s in-person seminars will be held in Classroom C of Political Sciences, organizing the class based on the current physical distancing rules. Additionally, even in the case of online platform seminars, it will be possible to follow them via streaming directly from the assigned classroom. In the event of a significant worsening of the health situation, however, the entire seminar cycle will be rescheduled on the online platform.

The Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Pavia organizes in September 2018 the Summer School “Al-ʿArabiyya fi Pavia: from words to language” for teaching and learning the Arabic language.
